“Fearless Fred”, PhD, on Field
Artillery 1944
Dr. Frederick M Fowkes. PhD. Professor Emeritus, nicknamed “Fearless
Fred” in the 149th Field Artillery, 31st Infantry
Division (Dixie). He retired as a Lt Colonel, Chemical Corps. After WW 2, he went on to become a world
renowned Surface Chemist at Shell Development, and retired as the Chairman of
the Chemistry Department at Lehigh University.
